FAQs
What is lokta paper?
Lokta paper is a traditional Nepalese paper made from the inner bark of the Daphne shrub — a wild, fast-regenerating plant that grows in the Himalayan foothills. It has been made by hand in Nepal since the 12th century and is known for its distinctive texture, natural colour variation, and exceptional durability.
What's included in the pack?
Each pack contains 5 sheets of lokta gift wrap (50cm × 70cm): 2 × deep indigo, 2 × light indigo, and 1 × natural/unbleached. Each sheet is vegetable dyed and screen printed by hand.
Is lokta paper really sustainable?
Yes. Lokta paper is 100% tree-free — made from the bark of a shrub, not felled timber. The plant regenerates naturally after harvest. No plastic, and the dyes are natural vegetable pigments. It also composts naturally if you choose to dispose of it.
Can lokta paper be reused?
Yes — and this is one of the things that makes it genuinely different. Lokta paper is much stronger than conventional gift wrap. If unfolded carefully, the same sheet can be used multiple times. Many of our customers keep and reuse their sheets for years.
What does Fair Trade certified mean?
It means our supply chain has been independently audited to verify that workers are paid fairly, work in safe conditions, and that a portion of income is reinvested in the local community. It is a verified standard, not a marketing claim.
Who makes the paper?
The paper is made by artisans in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. It is screen printed by hand in Kathmandu. The entire supply chain is Fair Trade certified.
